DefendEar Hunter Passive Earplugs by Westone® are for hunting environments where a low number of shots are fired. Small orifice, non-linear acoustic filters allow for awareness of game and tracking dog sounds, as well as easier communication with hunting/shooting partners. Designed for noise exposure to impulse noises below 160 dB peak SPL. Designed for adults only. Designed for hunters and not recommended for hearing protection in a multiple gunshot environment, like a shooting range.

Impulse noise is a loud blast of noise and may come from fireworks, gunfire, or explosions. Impulse noise is measured in dB peak pressure (dBP). Impulse noise greater than 140 dBP can cause immediate, permanent hearing loss. Even if immediate damage does not occur, impulse noises have the potential to damage your hearing over time.
Factors That Increase Risk of Hearing Loss from Firearms:
- Shooting in an indoor firing range or an enclosed structure such as a hunting blind which can redirect the sound wave energy back to your ears, increasing the noise levels reaching your ears.
- Shooting short-barreled guns because the muzzle is closer to your ears, increasing your risk.
- The caliber of the firearm can increase risk. Larger calibers generate higher energy sound waves, increasing dBP.

- Firing multiple rounds at a time, such as when range shooting, clay shooting, or bird hunting.
- Adding muzzle ports or muzzle brakes that send shock waves back towards your ears instead of out of the front of the muzzle, increasing your exposure and risk.
